The Arabic terms on these pages, how we write them in English letters, and what they mean.

How to read the transliteration

Transliteration follows the Taibah Publishing system. Transliterated words are in italics.

  • Underline: an emphatic letter or a long vowel. h is ح, s is ص, d is ض, t is ط and dh is ظ; a, i and u are long vowels, as in darurah.
  • ^ is the letter ^ayn (ع), as in ^adl.
  • ‘ is the hamzah (ء), as in ‘ijma^.
  • A doubled letter is pronounced doubled, as in Shafi^iyy.
  • Every term is written this way, halal and haram included, and so is our name, Zulal. One word keeps the spelling people search for: zabihah.

Slaughter

كِتَابِيّkitabiyyA Jew or a Christian, one of the People of the Book, whose hand slaughter Darul Fatwa accepts.
تَسْمِيَةtasmiyahMentioning the name of Allah, as the slaughterer does at the moment of slaughter.
تَكْبِيرtakbirDeclaring that Allah is the greatest.

Purity and impurity

ArabicTransliterationMeaning
مَيْتَةmaytahAn animal that died without a valid Islamic slaughter, whose meat is not permissible and whose bones, hair and skin are impure.
نَجِسnajisImpure: something that is itself filth in Islamic law, such as pork, blood or wine.
نَجَسnajasFilth: any impure substance.
نَجَاسَةnajasahImpurity: filth on the body, clothes or place of prayer that must be washed off before praying.
طَاهِرtahirPure: free of any impurity, as the body, clothes and place of prayer must be.
ٱسْتِحَالَةistihalahThe complete transformation of one substance into another, such as wine turning into vinegar.

Food and drink

خَبِيثkhabithRevolting: a thing Islamic law forbids eating because it is regarded as foul, even when it is not impure.

Islamic law

وَرَعwara^Extra piety: avoiding what is doubtful even when it is permitted.
عَدْل^adlUpright: someone who avoids the major sins, does not persist in minor ones, and is truthful.
